NTR’s Ramayya Vasthavayya is released worldwide today. It is a routine revenge drama directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Dil Raju. Samantha and Shruti Haasan played heroines in this film and SS Thaman composed the music.
An awara type hero falls for a beautiful heroine at first sight. Using his so-called brains, he makes heroine love him back. And a so-called twist takes place in interval scene. The greatest twist ever on Telugu screen is – hero didn’t fall for heroine. He just traps her to take revenge on her father, one of the villains. Why do hero wanted to kill heroine’s father? Because his father killed his girl friend and family.
Do you think that I’ve written Prabhas’ Rebel story in Ramayya Vasthavayya’s review. Sorry boss, the above story line is originally written by one and only Harish Shankar to show our Young Tiger NTR in a different way. Umpteen number of films were made with this story line. But none of them was as bad as Ramayya Vasthavayya. Harish Shankar has taken so many things for granted. His calibre in directing commercial films has been proved with Mirapakai and Gabbar Singh. His magic is completely missing in direction, screenplay and dialogues as well. Couple of dialogues got applause from fans. He tried to show NTR powerfully as Duryodhana with mace in introduction scene with lengthy Pouranika dialogues but the scene went flat and it is nothing when compared to Rajamouli’s Yamadonga interval scene. As he claimed, he didn’t show NTR differently. He just lied to us. Showing NTR as a student and making him imitate other stars cannot be considered as a difference.
It is really surprising that Dil Raju accepted this kind of story. Of course, he produced few flop films earlier. But Ramayya Vasthavayya is the first bad film in his banner. His production values of high quality are wasted by a poor quality script.
Thaman’s tunes are okay. He couldn’t do anything in terms of background score as there is no stuff in the scenes. Chota’s camera work is of top notch. Editing could have been a lot better. Action sequences are designed for front benchers.
NTR is just average. He has done similar kind of roles in the beginning of his career in a much better way. His dances in couple of songs are good. His styling is different and cool. Shruti Haasan played an important role in flashback episode. Samantha is confined to songs. She exposed her skin a lot compared to her previous films. Ravi Shankar and Mukesh Rishi played villains and their roles are very weak. Kota Srinivasa evoked few laughs as a bad politician. Rao Ramesh is wasted.
Ramayya Vasthavayya is almost similar to Rebel. While Rebel was bad, Ramayya Vasthavayya is worst. To be blunt, Harish Shankar is still in the sky with Gabbar Singh’s success. Ramayya Vasthavayya is a result of his take-it-for-granted attitude. NTR’s energitic performance and dances cannot save the film because of infinite minuses. Ramayya Vasthavayya may receive good openings due to festival season and NTR’s mass following. But content wise, Ramayya Vasthavayya is of D grade.
